There are some instructions on running a standalone client here:

You shouldm't need to configure anything in GlassFish special to allow your
client to connect to it.

However if you're using GlassFish 3.0.1 and your client is on a different
machine you may also need to work around this known bug:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E19798-01/821-1759/ggrvi.html#gjktp
(I'm referring to "Cannot send JMS messages between systems (Issue 112530")
That issue does not arise with GlassFish 3.1.
