I think your understanding is correct but please have a look at http://blogs.sun.com/glassfishforbusiness/
and ping the folks at users_at_open-esb.dev.java.net for a support matrix.
In general there should be no good reason to stick to 2.1 when 2.1.1 is out (except for product certifications or specific well known issues).
