I have the same problem because our customer has LDAP naming convention with commas.
I made a small program to point the problem out with LDAPRealm source code and I found the problem was because of the runtime not glassfih himself.
A related issue is opened since june 2007 http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6567865
I can't use glassfish LDAP authentication in production as long as the bug will remain.
