In the Required JDK Version section of  Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server v3 Preview Release Notes,  http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-7688/giqxv?a=view
it says:
Required JDK Version
Installation of Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server v3 Preview requires JDK release 6.
The minimum (and certified) version of the JDK software that is required for Enterprise Server depends on the operating system:

Hi,

  I tried starting a domain of a GF v3 Preview build with JDK5.

The command fails (checked with both b52 and b53) with the following message:
=========================
./asadmin start-domain
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/xml/stream/XMLStreamException
Command start-domain failed.
=========================

  Have filed an issue [1] reporting the same.
