Anissa,
I made sure my home directory did not have ~/.asadminpass
I did a fresh 'typical' install, which resulted in no errors being reported
to the installation GUI.
I then did the following:
pbelb_at_osol1:/tank2/nas4/liferay61/liferay-portal-6.1.0-ce-rc1/glassfish-3.1.2/glassfish/bin$
[1] ./asadmin change-admin-password
Enter admin user name [default: admin]>
Enter admin password>
Enter new admin password>
Enter new admin password again>
Command change-admin-password executed successfully.
pbelb_at_osol1:/tank2/nas4/liferay61/liferay-portal-6.1.0-ce-rc1/glassfish-3.1.2/glassfish/bin$
[2] ./asadmin enable-secure-admin
Authentication failed with password from login store:
/home/pbelb/.asadminpass
Enter admin password for user "admin">
You must restart all running servers for the change in secure admin to take
effect.
Command enable-secure-admin executed successfully.
pbelb_at_osol1:/tank2/nas4/liferay61/liferay-portal-6.1.0-ce-rc1/glassfish-3.1.2/glassfish/bin$
[3] ./asadmin stop-domain domain1
Waiting for the domain to stop ...
Command stop-domain executed successfully.
pbelb_at_osol1:/tank2/nas4/liferay61/liferay-portal-6.1.0-ce-rc1/glassfish-3.1.2/glassfish/bin$
[4] ./asadmin start-domain domain1
Waiting for domain1 to start ..
Successfully started the domain : domain1
domain Location:
/tank2/nas4/liferay61/liferay-portal-6.1.0-ce-rc1/glassfish-3.1.2/glassfish/domains/domain1

at which point, I brought up firefox, and used
http://127.0.0.1:4848 [6] as
the URL. Firefox put up a couple of responses about the site not being
trusted, to which I answered that I wanted to press on regardless.
at this point, I got the glassfish page saying that the admin console was
being started, and it showd the correct build number. after a brief
(perhaps 5 seconds) the normal admin console login page was shown.
now, I supply the admin / adminadmin for user name and password, and got a
response box saying that authentication has failed, re-enter your username
and password.
I have attached my server.log file.
