Thanks Nigel, I found this post via google having the same NPE, and checking this log file revealed a stale lock file since I had just rsync'd my glassfish directory from another running instance. For the benefit of others arriving here via google...
rm /opt/glassfish/domains/domain1/imq/instances/imqbroker/lock
Then restart glassfish and I was in business. Thanks much.
