If anyone is interested, I gave up on this. Getting the app to run as a standalone client using JNDI turned out to be pretty easy. See:

It's a shame that I don't get the injection/authentication for free, as well as the webstart stuff. We will definitely take another look at the ACC when GF v3 comes out.
