At first I thought your solution wouldn't work either chrjohn, because I got the same Invocation Exception.
But then I made a jsp and tried to access my bean with that and it worked!
The other Servlet is actually a RemoteServiceServlet (Google Web Toolkit) and still doesn't work - do you have any idea what could be wrong with that?
I have used a self made ServiceLocator in both the jsp and the Servlet, so it's the same code that works in jsp but doesn't in the servlet.
