You mention that the URL was something like this
service:jmx:rmi:///jndi/rmi://<hostname>:8686/jmxr

Try a "nmap -p 8686 <hostname>" or a "netstat -a | grep 8686" and see if something is listening.
If nothing is listening, your problem may be indirectly related to this issue
