It's true, I did have another WebService in this project. The other Web Service was fine; it used only primitive types and was similarly contrived. I had a problem once I added this second web service, with the custom classes.
To keep things simple, I removed the first web service. Once I did a Clean and Build, followed by a Deploy, it worked... I'm not sure why that happened, but good catch anyway.
