I'll answer the injection question first - I did try with injection, but being honest, I am looking at converting one of our main apps over from the hodgepodge of evil that it is, to using glassfish.
The program is somewhat large - somewhere in the range of 150 UI panels not to mention the logic behind them. While the injection would be nice, I don't particularly want all that floating around (if i understand correctly that it needs to be initialized at startup)
currently using jnlp lookup
the closest I could find int he bug db was

Which I suspect might be the issue you are referring to.

both glassfish servers are vanilla installs, although I would be less then surprised if its something simple I am messing up. This is my first real chance to get the time to delve into application servers.
