I've updated my slapd.conf for OpenLDAP to set an idletimeout of 15 seconds, this should help resolve the situation for my environment.
There still seems to be something wrong with LDAPRealm that ultimately needs to be fixed. A small pool of connections should be plenty for it's needs.
