Hi,
The OpenPortal project is attempting to build an Enterprise Portal platform that involves integrations with a lot of applications. Due to this it has a lot of dependencies and also requires lots of memory and CPU resources.

If you are looking for a lightweight Portal application the following are the OSS projects that you would be interested in:

https://wsrp.dev.java.net/
https://portlet-container.dev.java.net/

These are sub projects for the OpenPortal Project and are completely standalone.
Just build these workspaces, install the WSRP binaries on to the Portlet Container install.
i.e follow the regular install instructions for WSRP project and you have light weight webtop running JSR 286 and WSRP 2.0.

BTW both these run best on GFV2
