The <realm>..</realm> entry can only be specified for server side entities in a sun-application.xml, web.xml and sun-ejb-jar.xml and not application-client.xml.

And whenever you are in doubt about what things are supported inside a particular descriptor, you can take a look at the DTD's for those descriptors stored in <GF.HOME>/lib/dtds (not the best way but a workaround when you don't have any other documentation).
