This turns out to be Issue 1016 which describes the null pointer exception when using Java Web Start to launch a stand-alone app client.

which was fixed for GlassFish V2 (SJS AS 9.1) code but not in time for the GlassFish V1 (SJS AS 9.0ur1p0) build.
You can work around this problem by:
- using a more recent build of GlassFish, or
- using your current GlassFish/SJSAS installation but packaging your stand-alone app client in an EAR and deploying it that way.
I'm sorry it took longer than I'd hope to get to the bottom of this.
