Answering my own question.
This entry in the EJB faq explains how not to worry about Context properties:

In a nutshell, simply add appserver-rt.jar to your classpath and use the no-arg constructor.
The problem is not solved just yet because trying to list the entire JNDI tree triggers an exception filed as bug # 2926 (
https://glassfish.dev.java.net/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=2926
)
