If you are using TopLink Essentials in GlassFish application server, this blog explains the details: http://blogs.sun.com/java2dbInGlassFish/entry/automatic_table_generation_feature_in. It's very similar outside of the appserver.

If you are using some other persistence provider, you need to check their docs for the details.
