Finally resolved the problem by upgrading to GF4. Apparently this problem was
caused by a bug in GF3 that has been addressed. There is a lot of reports of
similar problems with GF3 on the Web, but none that give specifics on how to
debug the problem. So it seems like the only foolproof option is to upgrade.
