I've seen this problem when there is some networking issue with the system.
For example I seem to recall seeing this when there was a problem with
hostname resolution (DNS) on a system. You may want to see if there are any
suspicious differences in /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf between when you
boot hardwired vs the WLAN.
