And it is worth noting that in order to use updatetool to perform this kind of upgrade you would first need to explicitly switch your preferred authority from stable.glassfish.org to dev.glasssfish.org since 3.1 is still under development and therefore of lesser stability than the initial 3.0.1 installation...

You can install 3.1 in a parallel directory and run asupgrade from
3.1install/bin
to upgrade your domain OR run updatetool from 3.0.1 to upgrade to 3.1.
