It looks like I am out of luck.  Section 6.10.1 says, quite unambiguously:

A resource adapter must provide implementations of the following interfaces:

  * javax.resource.spi.ManagedConnectionFactory
  * javax.resource.spi.ManagedConnection
  * javax.resource.spi.ManagedConnectionMetaData
