Do you have any add-on virus-scanner or software firewall installed?
I've seen all sorts of wacky issues with software that tries to offer
"privacy protection", "identity theft protection", etc via browser
extensions - and generally does it badly.
If you do, try disabling it and trying again to see if that makes the
problem go away.
Also: Are you on 32- or 64-bit Windows XP? And what JVM & version are
you using?
