I am not sure about why using 1.6.0-21 works, but I'm glad it does.
About the missing class...
Which JAR in your application contains this class? Make sure that the JAR either resides in the EAR's /lib directory (or the directory you specify in application.xml using <library-directory>) or in a JAR elsewhere in the EAR that is specified in the app client JAR's manifest Class-Path.
