Hi Guys, Sorry to post the following here, unfortunately I don't have the correct email addresses to ensure that these concerns get to the appropriate people at Sun and Sparc, so if someone from this list at Sun could forward it onto someone who has the authority to investigate I'd really appreciate. Again, sorry for the OT post :)
Hi Sun/Sparc,
As a Java programmer in Finance/Insurance for many many years, and a Sun Certified Enterprise Architect, I regularly consult with large organisation on what best deployment architecture to go with for their enterprise Java application. I regularly recommend Sparc servers (Sun Sparc) to my clients as the architecture is rock solid, and because I have always admired the ethics of Sun Microsystems and believe that ethical companies should be rewarded through customer loyalty.
I was surprised to hear you have ordered the fantastic, and long standing hobby electronics site, www.sparkfun.com, to stop operating and turn over their website to you.
I am a regular user of SparkFun tutorials and a regular customer and cannot imagine that anyone could confuse the two of you. I am also perplexed as to why you would want to deprive electronics hobbyists of such a great resource. A lot of your technical customer base (architects and senior engineers) are weekend electronics hobbyist, and a vast amount of them use sparkfun for tutorials and components. It would be a great shame to see Sun and Sparc use their considerable corporate weight to shut down a site that offers so much value to the engineering community, and which has very little chance of being confused with Sparc or Sun or anything related to the two. I also consider this style of lawsuit to be distasteful and contrary to the values of openness, honesty and innovation that our industry (or the more ethical players in our industry) pride themselves on.
While my future loyalty to Sun and Sparc is not dependant upon you dropping this lawsuit, to continue with it would significantly tarnish your reputation in my eyes.
Sincerely
Adam Jenkins
