Hi,

You should be fine with Ubuntu 9.04; I run it on a desktop with the
sun-java-6 vm.
Just apt-get sun-java-6 (iirc)

Also, you can use Redhat Enterprise / CentOS, which works like a charm
for me and has been for the past years.
