In an application that wants to use JPA but that is getting deployed to a J2EE 1.4 container, there is no way to inject or look up an EMF (by default, i.e. unless there is special extension added somehow). In such cases the only solution would be to use Persistence.createEMF and as such use RESOURCE_LOCAL pu (unless again the JPA provider has some special support for starting a UserTransaction in the background).
Does it make sense?
