Well, I got it working when I added a rule to allow anything from 127.0.0.1 which I thought would be covered by the loopback rule, but as I look at it again I don't see it. I suppose it got lost when I reinstalled :(
In other words, I am teh suck and I'm sorry for blaming Glassfish :(
