I'm very un-familiar with IBM J9 (Java 6) on AIX but it seems that it ships with additional libraries in jre/lib compared to its Java 5 counterpart (logging.jar for instance) which indeed hijacks the GlassFish logs. I filed https://glassfish.dev.java.net/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=7011
