If you have a chance, you should give a try to GlassFish with your fix.
This is the kind of exception that "might" makes a difference between
Tomcat and GlassFish. But I undertand you have wasted enough time....

I agree....if you can reproduce the problem with GlassFish and get a new
jstack dump, feel free to post it here :-) Without it, it is quite
difficult to track the issue.
