to clarify: neither j2se 5 nor j2se 6 provide any default impl for CookieHandler, but unlike j2se 5, j2se 6 does provide an impl of CookieHandler. (the previously mentioned java.net.CookieManager) which may be set as the default CookieHandler, by calling CookieHandler.setDefault(new CookieManager());
