unfortunately I don't understand what went wrong, so there's little that I could add to the troubleshooting guide... :-) Because my research and my questions on the list did lead nowhere and in the end even the Glassfish experts had no idea, I just took a step back and restarted with alternative instructions which did turn out to work.
So thanks once more for your help. I hope my other reply in this thread to Kumar's question will shed some light on what the problem was.
