The example works with MySQL by just changing the datasource name or u can just create a connection pool for mysql which uses the resource jdbc/Sybase... it does not matter.
The example uses a Stateless session bean for doing the JPA work. Your example uses a stateless session bean as well. If you configure your example in a similar manner, you should get it to work. Web services is not the issue here.
