After ascertaining that the problem had nothing to do with GF (it
happened with any Java app), I went googling. Turns out the problem was
that I had moved my %TEMP% and %TMP% dirs to free up disk space. Moving
them back made jconsole happy again, as question 1 of the JConsole FAQ
pointed out. When in doubt, RTFM.
