What Daniel's (first one in list below) article refers to is the ability to configure "a particular application" for availability.
As you can see, the actual changes to web.xml are not much because that's a standard descriptor
and all entries in sun-web.xml are available in domain.xml (with config support in admin console
and admin CLI, asadmin).
So, you can go for either. You don't have to modify deployment descriptors (other than making
your web-application <distributable/> for example) for clustering to work.
