Java is cross platform. As long as you have a JVM (Java virtual machine) for your hardware platform you can use java programs without any recompilation.
I'm not intimately familiar with HP-UX, but a google search turned up this link for a JDK (java development kit) download.

If you have never done any java development before then I suggest read threw the sun tutorials.
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/
You can then pick up some books on Web Services if you need to.
