Are you planning to address that issue with (.+)? too as part of this update (though it's a bit orthogonal to the algorithm itself
but to do with the @Path's value conversion procedure) ?

Paul and I discussed this at length this morning and I'm going to try
to rewrite the algorithm along the lines you suggest. The rewrite
won't actually affect the algorithms results but will hopefully be
clearer. Its worth pointing out that implementations aren't required
to implement resource matching using the algorithm as described,
rather they are required to produce results that are the same - I'll
add an explicit note of this to the specification.
