Mainly because I consider it a relic of the pre-Collections JDK and believe
it should be / have been deprecated. Further, as you mentioned, it is
redundant. Thus I try to avoid using it when possible.

I'm curious why you don't like Vector. AFAIK the only difference between
ArrayList and Vector is the synchronization.
