I've tried Xerces 2.3.0 and 2.4.0 with no success. The same error
occurs, albeit with a different line number.
I shall investigate how easy it is to use a different parser, but I
would prefer to use Xerces since we're using it elsewhere in our code.
Is this definitely a Xerces bug?

Check the version of Xerces and try to replace it with a newer version,
if that's possible.
Or you can install another lean and mean XML parser (like Crimson) and
force JAXB to use it by using SAXSource.
