It is only possible to not append the port in the url, if you're using
the default port
for the specific protocol:
http -> 80
https -> 443
ftp -> 21
etc.

if you want to get https without adding the port, then you'll have to
create a server internal
forwarding.

there are several possible ways to do this,
mod_proxy
mod_jk
iptables ( http://dominikdorn.com/2010/04/tomcat-glassfish-jetty-port-80-iptables-nat/
)
