Just for the record:
We had the same problem and i can confirm the sample code in this thread just works (GF2/GF2, GF3/GF3 and GF3/GF2).
The issue with /etc/hosts only occurs on Ubuntu (both 8.04 and 10.04) not on CentOS (5.4).
