1 - It just disappears without any kind of signal, log, notification, error.....nothing.
2 - varies. sometimes almost immediately. yesterday I started it and purposefully did not
access it to see how long the process would stick around....it seemed to dwell longer, but it did go away overnight.
3 - not that I am aware of....just running Sun Java Enterprise System 7 (iwc, da, im, convergence)
