I was able to deploy pebble.war, access its welcome page, and login as the
default user without any issues.

I'm using v2.1.1, but v2ur2 should work just the same.

I've attached the relevant portion of my server.log

Note that you don't have to download and install log4j,
since pebble.war already comes bundled with it
(in WEB-INF/lib/log4j-1.2.15.jar).
