i think i have a new insight as to why this is happening, but i'm not sure.
it appears as if the classes i'm trying to reference my new bean from are probably part of a servlet that deals with comet actions. i'm going to try pre-pending the fully qualified class name and/or editing the web.xml jar (that the comet servlet is configured in).
