i used the browser on the "other" machine to bring up the admin screen - so 4848 is not blocked on the glassfish server - probably 3700 is not blocked as well. is there any other reason the lookup would hang?
step 5 advises looking on the admin screen for "orb-listener-1", but i couldn't find it - or, even, where it might be located. i'm using the standard config/default.xml for domain1 - so it is defined there.
