in addition to using mappedName to get it to work - as noted above - i also saw the jndi names in the server.log for the domain when the session bean was deployed - i don't know if the mappedName addition triggered the log message or if it was there all along - i also haven't tried to use the names in the server.log for lookup - but they look like they would work.
