Your original error sounds like MQ bug 6650996:

The problem occured when using an embedded client and broker to receive messages sent by a remote producer. The workaround was to configure GlassFish to use a local broker rather than an embedded broker.

As has been reported, this bug was fixed in MQ 4.1 Patch 2, which is included in GF 2.1.
