The v3 prelude release did not include app client support...too much to do, too little time, etc. etc. EARs were not supported either so app clients would have been of limited use at best in prelude.
We are planning to have more features in an early access release of v3 near JavaOne (early June) and we expect to have app client support as part of that release. The details are still evolving and the v3 planning process is going on right now.
