I was about to suggest that perhaps a firewall is blocking port 3700 (one used by some attacks) but when you said the NetBeans enterprise client could connect successfully that eliminated that as a possibility.

One thing to try is to look in the server.log file in ${install-dir}/domains/domain1/logs at the time of the failed attempt to connect and see if there is anything useful reported there. Or, as you say, if you are doing all the admin via NetBeans you can view the log that way. (If I remember correctly, a right-click on the GlassFish server as displayed in the Services tab should offer a "View server log" option.)
