Thanks for the advice. It looks to me that hibernate is wrapping some of the database errors in custom exceptions instead of the ones in the jpa specification. It is very hard to track down. It seems that I might have to catch all ejbexceptions but it does not seem like a very good idea. Possibly I have to come up with a different design which can avoid exceptions entirely.
