One need not explicitly start javadb server(asadmin start-database) unless they want to run the database in network mode.
That said, if the application deployed on glassfish uses javadb in embedded mode, it is available immediately after glassfish server comes up, no need for explicit start.
What type of app is this? What is the exact requirement as for as javadb usage is concerned for this app?
